Did You Hear About the Changes Made by the TGA?

If your pharmacy looked into medicinal cannabis vaping devices last year, it's worth looking again.

Not because the entire framework has been rewritten.

But because the device landscape available to Australian pharmacies has changed — quite significantly.

So, where were we last year?

In January 2025, the TGA updated its medicinal cannabis vaping-device information to reflect the implications of Australia's broader vaping reforms on the importation and supply of medicinal cannabis vaping substances and devices.

For pharmacists, one of the important messages was already clear:

Medicinal cannabis vaping devices can only be supplied to patients through pharmacies.

So the pharmacy already had an important place in this category.

But then came 2026.

What changed this year?

Three medicinal cannabis vaping devices were added to the ARTG within weeks of each other.

Together with the SyqeAir Inhaler, which had been included since October 2023, the TGA's current published list now contains four medicinal cannabis vaping devices approved for supply in Australia.

That's the update pharmacists should notice.

Why does that matter to pharmacies?

Because the conversation has changed from simply:

“Can our pharmacy supply medicinal cannabis vaping devices?”

to:

“What devices are actually available to us now?”

The TGA states that the devices on its approved list are included in the ARTG and have been approved for quality, safety and performance. They are intended for the inhalation of vaporised medicinal cannabis and can be purchased by patients through pharmacies.

So depending on where your pharmacy currently sits, the update means something slightly different.

Not supplying devices?
There are now more ARTG-included options than there were last year. It may be worth reassessing whether this category belongs in your pharmacy.

Start with the current landscape, not what you remember from last year. Understand which devices are now available and how they fit into your existing medicinal cannabis service.

Already supplying devices?
Make sure your team's product knowledge has kept pace. New ARTG inclusions mean patients and prescribers may begin asking about devices your team hasn't previously encountered.

2025: the industry was adapting to the vaping reforms.

2026: the ARTG device landscape expanded.

And for pharmacies?

Same category. More ARTG-included options. A different landscape.

You don't need to memorise every regulatory update.
